Join me and Jennifer for a fun and creative painting workshop

Saturday, May 11, 1-3:00 pm EST.

Join us for a spring-inspired Zoom workshop : People and Gardens. This might look like a woman in a garden, a woman wearing a dress with a garden pattern, or a garden with multiple people in it... we always explore lots of ideas before we land on the idea that feels best to paint with you! After our painting demo, we always show this process of deciding what we will paint - giving you a peek into our creative process.

We love keeping these Zoom workshops donation-based so they are accessible to everyone. Please do keep in mind that we work hard to give you great classes, so we appreciate that those of you who can afford to pay more will do so, and this helps those who can afford less!

We suggest a minimum of $20, but we understand that may not be possible for everybody. Please be honest and pay what you can afford.

Sunday, March 3, 1-3:00 pm EST. 'People and Places 2'

We love keeping these Zoom workshops donation-based so they are accessible to everyone. Please do keep in mind that we work hard to give you great classes, so we appreciate that those of you who can afford to pay more will do so, and this helps those who can afford less!

Note: EVERYONE who signs up, for live or video only will get the video.

After painting in Oaxaca for a week we are so inspired to paint people in scenes.

This class will focus on painting one or a few people incorporated into a scene. The workshop will begin with a short show and tell from each of us, showing what we're working on currently as well as our sketchbooks from Oaxaca. For each of our 40-minute painting demos, we will show different ways that we paint people in scenes. Using photo reference we simplify the scenes and plan out our composition first in black and white. Then we draw it on our paper before painting.

You will have the opportunity to see our painting process, and either paint along with us or just watch. Everyone will have access to the recording later. You will have a chance to ask us questions in the chat. While Gayle is painting Jennifer will monitor the chat and relay questions and Gayle will do the same while Jennifer paints. You’re welcome to either simply watch or you can paint along with us.

We want these classes to be accessible to anyone who'd like to take them, and we’re so happy that this donation-based model is working so well. Pay what you can! NOTE: whatever your donation, you will also be charged the Eventbrite fees. Do keep in mind that we work hard to give you great classes, so we appreciate that those of you who can afford to pay more will help those who can afford less!

If you can't make it on March 3 there is a video-only option. EVERYONE from the live class will also get the video. It takes about a week for us to have the video edited after the class.

Donation:

March is National Women's Month. Our donation from this class will go to vitalvoices.org. For more than 25 years, Vital Voices Global Partnership has been investing in women leaders solving the world’s greatest challenges.

Join us for a new workshop: Reinterpreting Mona Lisa

The Zoom link will be sent a few days before the workshop

January 13 - 1-3:00 pm EST.
In this cold and darker time of year, we thought it'd be a fun, lighthearted few hours to paint our versions of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. We always learn a lot when we reinterpret the masters.
We know you will enjoy this!

As always, a few days before the class we will give you various reference photos that we will paint from during the class. The workshop will begin with a short show and tell from
each of us. We will be showing some current work and sketchbooks. You will have the opportunity to see our painting process, and paint along with us or just
watch. Everyone will have access to the recording within a week we will send a link of the video to everyone. You will have a chance to ask us questions in the chat. While Gayle is painting Jennifer will monitor the chat and relay questions and Gayle will do the same while Jennifer paints. We paint with Acryla gouache, but you are welcome to paint or draw with anything that you have. We want these classes to be accessible to anyone who
like to take them, and we’re so happy that this donation-based model is working so well.

Here's a link to our favorite art supplies, but you can paint & draw with anything you want!

Pay what you can! Do keep in mind that we work hard to give you great classes, so we appreciate that those of you who can afford to pay more will help those who can
afford less! To be honest - people pay from $1 to $200! We trust you to pay what feels right for YOU. If you can't make it on Jan. 13th there is a video-only option. EVERYONE from the live class will also get the video. It takes about a week for us to have the video edited after the class.

Join us for a fun and creative painting workshop: Fashion and Pattern Inspired

September 9. 1-3:00 pm EST.

It’ll be fashion week in NYC so we thought it would be fun to focus on painting a woman in a beautiful decorated gown. We will give you various reference photos (you will get these a few days before the class) with different pattern ideas and we will show you how we work out making the painted patterns flow around the fabric.

The workshop will begin with a short show and tell from each of us. Gayle graduated from art school as a fashion illustrator and also taught fashion illustration for a few years, so she will show you how to draw the proportions of a fashion figure. Jennifer has licensed so many of her painted patterns on clothing and so many other projects, for clients like Anthropologie and Kate Spade, she will show you some of these projects as well as more details on how to create a beautiful loosely painted pattern on the dress. For each of our 40-minute painting demos, we will also show different ways that we paint women, clothing, and pattern. Using photo reference we simplify the image and plan out our composition first in black and white. Then we draw it on our paper in water color pencil before painting. A few testimonials from our Zoom workshops

  • It is a great learning experience to watch the process of painting by others. I really like how each artist shared their approach to the blank page, composition, color palette choices, subject matter, and how they use photos for reference (and most of all, putting the photo away for a bit!).

  • I love watching the both of you paint and describe your process. All the little tid bits,: types of mediums, brands, sizes of brushes, etc. All the behind the scenes information!

  • I was happy to see the ladies there before the starting time. It was a very nice way to enter the environment. Love Gayle and Jennifer. Love seeing their process in painting but also their prep for the session.

  • I liked everything about the class! I learned a lot from listening to both Gayle and Jennifer talk about their work. I especially enjoyed the emphasis on having fun. Watching them paint was amazing and instructive

  • I was not able to watch it live, so I really appreciated being able to watch it later. It was almost just as good! I loved seeing you both "in action"--so nice to realize that you struggle with procrastination and insecurities about your work too--(although I don't know why!)
I can't wait for more online classes — it was like getting together with friends that share common interests, even though I didn't know anyone :) Thanks again.

A few Testimonials from our weeklong workshops

  • Jennifer and Gayle are AHHHmazing! They have such different styles and it was wonderful to watch them paint the same thing and share their techniques. We had everyone from rank beginners (me and another) to superb artists in their own right. No matter where we fell on the art experience spectrum, we all learned so much and had a blast to boot. Looooved this getaway and plan to go to another Paint With Gayle and Jennifer soon. I highly recommend them!

  • As an artist, I loved being immersed in the creative environment that Gayle and Jennifer establish for their students.  As a long-time art teacher,  I was most impressed with Gayle and Jennifer’s expansive approach to teaching and artmaking. They opened doors for everyone, from first-time painters to advanced artists with their own personal practices. Their focus on play and exploration lead me to constant discoveries, and the fun and camaraderie I experienced with other workshop participants was wonderful!

  • Gayle and Jennifer are amazing instructors!  I spent a week on one of their art retreats and loved every minute.  They have different, and wonderfully complementary, teaching and artistic styles.  One of their big themes is to “play and have fun.”  That philosophy – and their encouragement – helped me move past self-judgment and jump into experimentation and learning.  Thank you, Gayle and Jennifer….I look forward to more classes with you in the future!

Zoom Workshops

Painting Women & Pattern - Zoom Workshop March 12. 1-3:30 pm EST

Join me and Jennifer Orkin Lewis/@Augustwren for a fun and creative painting workshop March 12 th. 1-3:30 pm EST. This class is longer than our other classes. In honor of Women's History Month, we're adding a 30-minute exercise.

The workshop will begin with a short show and tell from each of us, showing portraits of women. Then there will be a 30-minute exercise 'Painting Dot Faces.' We will very loosely paint all kinds of women's faces of all ages, sizes, and colors as well as a few famous women in history like Malala, RBG, and Sojourner Truth.

If you come to the class with ten, two-inch dots already painted on paper or in a sketchbook, then you won't have to wait for them to dry and will be ready to go. (See images below)

For our 40-minute painting demos, we re-interpret this beautiful painting by Gustav Klimt. We will not copy the painting but only be inspired by it! Adding our own spin on the painting, like flowers that bloom in spring, such as narcissus, crocus, cherry trees, iris, and magnolias, as other creative re-interpretations.

You will have the opportunity to see our painting process, and either paint along with us or just watch. Everyone will have access to the recording later.

After the dot faces exercise we will each do a painting demo for 40 minutes, leaving time in the end for show and tell from those of you who would like to share what you've done

You will have a chance to ask us questions in the chat. While Gayle is painting Jennifer will monitor the chat and relay questions and Gayle will do the same while Jennifer paints. You’re welcome to either simply watch or you can paint along with us.
