I was in Grenada on a job assignment during the election. I watched it alone. Took a sleeping pill at 1 am. Woke up alone to the news. Felt a similar sense of grief that was familiar - to how I felt on 9/11. I made a lot of art in the following weeks.
I created art for the Women's March while listening to my daughter Sonya Kitchell's song Funeral, written in response to the election - imagining what women of all colors and ages might look like at the March on Washington. Determined. Angry yet hopeful. Brave. Strong. United. Now there are marches all over the country and I will be marching in Boston. I sent the marching women and the crying face to Francoise Mouly as New Yorker cover art submissions. I heard back from her the next day , telling me about RESIST! and asking to use the crying face on the splash page of the website. I had no idea the women marching would end up on the cover.
This art was originally going to be part of an online image campaign that I was working on in collaboration with my Art For Obama team of designer Laura Radwell and marketing whiz Mitch Anthony. We spoke a few days after the election, Laura was in Berlin, I was in Granada and Mitch in Western MA. We wanted our 'poster' campaign to begin with the women's march and have lots art by different artists each poster going to a central website with info, links and articles to inform people on that particular cause. We found ourselves too busy to actually pull off this idea - so when Francoise asked to use the art on the cover of RESIST! I was happy it found the perfect home. I submitted a lot more art to RESIST! and made a lot of art just for myself. The art with many women and signs was a wonderful collaboration with many women.
55,000 copies of RESIST! will be officially released on January 20th. They are co-ordinating a national distribution network to distribute them in Washington, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Des Moines, and Texas -- as well as shipping boxes of 50 copies to supporters throughout the country.
Resist! is published as a special issue of Gabe Fowler’s quarterly comic Smoke Signal, and is a series of illustrations and comics by mostly women artists created in response to Trump’s election.
